2014 Marine Layer Chardonnay
Meyer Lemon, Cream, Gravenstein Apple, and Nutmeg
As our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs have come into their own, we have been working diligently on the Chardonnay side to catch up to that high level. We are exceedingly confident about where we are with that program, so much so that we decided to launch a Marine Layer Chardonnay for the 2014 vintage.
Marine Layer is a special barrel selection from our best vineyards - in this case Heintz and Bohemian - blending them together to create an homage to the chilly Sonoma Coast in our backyard. Heintz and Bohemian vineyards are only about 1/2 mile apart as the crow flies, sitting on the same ridge with Bohemian facing the east and Heintz sloping to the west. These decidedly different expressions of the same area work fabulously together in a blend.
In the glass, the wine is a vibrant straw color with a faint twinge of green. It sports aromas of hazelnut, ripe pear and brioche, pulling off a feat of seeming moderately rich and lithe/entergtic at the same time. Flavors of meyer lemon, cream, Gravenstein apple, nutmeg, and salt all mingle through the incredible long finish.
Hand harvested and sorted before being whole cluster pressed in a bladder press under a Champagne cycle. It settled for one day before being barreled down in to a mix of new (30%), once-used (20%), and neutral barrels (50%). The wine completed both primary and malolactic fermentation in barrel with no lees stirring.
