As the name suggests, Broken Leg is a rugged Mendocino vineyard with an injurious past. While being planted back in the 80’s, the owner Steve Williams broke his leg on its slopes, thus christening the vineyard name. It is a frighteningly steepvineyard with resident mountain lions and black bears who enjoy munching on the grapes right before harvest time.

The vineyard is way, way out, with more marijuana farms than vineyards in the area. Sitting ona forested mountainside about 30 minutes from Philo, the south facing terraces grow Syrah, Viognier, and a small amount of Pinot Noir. There are two clones of Syrah planted here, and our rendition is about 50/50 between the Shiraz and Durrell clone. The aforementioned Viognier was spared by thebearsthis year, so we included in the fermentwith Syrah,as is common in the Northern Rhône.

The Viognier is immediately apparenton the liftedaromas of the wine contributing a warm spice note to the ethereal violet and pepper notes of the Syrah. On the palate, one finds notes of dark cherry, smoky blackberry, and freshly cracked pepper mélange with a bare hint of orange rind (perhaps from the Viognier again). The finish is long and savory with notes of olive pits and granite.
